Bentall Kennedy has been acquired by Sun Life
January 2015 — Sun Life Financial and Bentall Kennedy Group have announced an agreement whereby Sun Life will acquire Bentall Kennedy. The two firms will combine their real estate investment management teams, and Bentall Kennedy will be a unit of Sun Life Investment Management. Bentall Kennedy will retain its brand name and be Sun Life’s exclusive real estate investment management platform.
Bentall Kennedy is a premier real estate investment management firm operating in Canada and the US. It provides specialized real estate investment management and real estate services, including property management and leasing. As of 31 March 2015, the group had assets under management of US$21 billion and provided real estate services across 91 million square feet of property.
Sun Life is a financial services company providing insurance, wealth and asset management solutions to individuals and corporate clients worldwide.

Berner Group has successfully closed a US$23.4 million secured private credit facility to fund the repositioning of a former rehabilitation clinic into a student housing scheme in the Rhine-Main region of Germany. The financing was provided by a private debt fund, and structured across three tranches to address the specific requirements of the transaction, including the refinancing of existing bank facilities, funding of capital expenditure and operating costs during lease-up and a conditional tranche linked to the completion of fire safety and remediation works. The deal was structured with a comprehensive security package comprising a first-ranking land charge, share pledge and subordination agreements with existing lenders. Approximately 1% cash equity was contributed by the sponsor, reflecting the strength of the underlying asset and business plan.
