How to give a company a new strategic direction after years of setbacks?

Derk te Bokkel (Royal IHC): "The only way was forward"

Royal IHC has undergone a significant strategic transformation in recent years. Under the leadership of CEO Derk te Bokkel, the company has evolved from a traditional shipbuilder into a systems integrator, with a stronger focus on high-tech equipment and an international production model.

In a conversation with Oaklins-partner Fokko Poldervaart, Te Bokkel explains how Royal IHC charted a new course following a challenging period. The company has significantly increased its order intake and sees growth opportunities across markets including dredging, offshore, mining and defence. Te Bokkel sees particularly strong potential in the latter, and Royal IHC is therefore actively working to position itself as a ‘defence-ready’ partner.

At the same time, challenges remain. According to Te Bokkel, access to financing is currently the main constraint on the company’s ability to capture its full market potential. Sufficient financing capacity is essential to continue executing larger projects. The speed of decision-making and procurement processes within the defence sector also plays an important role.

In the interview, Te Bokkel also discusses leadership, shareholders, risk management and how Royal IHC navigates uncertainty. His central message is clear: a well-defined strategy, diversification across different markets and the ability to effectively execute strategic choices are crucial to achieving sustainable recovery and further growth.
